Description | After the assassination of President Kennedy in November 1963, his vice president, Lyndon Johnson, succeeded him. The following year the Republican party nominated Arizona's right-wing senator Barry Goldwater as its presidential candidate to stand against Johnson for election to the White House. Goldwater, who held that 'Extremism in the defence of liberty is no vice', ran a PR campaign that included photos of himself dressed in the 'uniform' of his home state, wearing a cowboy hat and holding a gun. Abu shows Johnson and the gun-toting Goldwater in an Arizona landscape with its unique giant saguaro cactus plants. (Johnson beat Goldwater in a landslide victory, tasking 61% of the votes.) |
