DescriptionRecords relating to the Guardian library/research departments in Manchester and London.
Admin HistoryWhilst some form of library department existed from the early days of the Manchester Guardian, it wasn't until the 1950s that a professional librarian was appointed at Cross Street, Manchester. The library was responsible for maintaining the index of news stories until the early 1970s, and a vast library of cuttings files on personalities and subjects, as well as conducting research for journalists. When the majority of the Guardian's editorial departments moved to London in 1964 a London library was established which ran separately from the original Manchester Library, which eventually closed in the late 1980s. The Library is now known as the Research & Information department.
