The microfilm of the indexes was produced in three parts: Part 1: 1848-1880; Part 2: 1881-1904; Part 3: 1905-1928. This separation appears to be based solely on the process of microfilm production, rather than any distinction by the creators of the original ledgers.
The index terms are used in a single sequence incorporating subjects, places and persons. The terms used change over time. Samples of the terms used, taken from 1850 and 1929, are listed in the appendix to 'The Guardian Index, 1842-1985 - A listing and guide'. |
