Abstract | Index to the Guardian newspaper, 1929-1972. Microfiche of the newspaper's own typescript index cards. Each set of index cards covers a single year. The original card indexes are held by the John Rylands University Library of Manchester.
The microfiche of the indexes was produced in five parts: Part 1: 1929-1935; Part 2: 1936-1945; Part 3: 1946-1955; Part 4: 1956-1962; Part 5: 1963-1972. This separation appears to be based solely on the process of microfiche production, rather than any distinction by the creators of the original index cards.
The index terms are used in a single sequence incorporating subjects, places and persons. The terms used change over time. Samples of the terms used, taken from 1850 and 1929, are listed in the appendix to 'The Guardian Index, 1842-1985 - A listing and guide'.
For a period c1970s, the sport terms have been excluded from the main index, being placed in their own Sport index at the end of that year's terms. |
