DescriptionIn June 1964 the shadow chancellor, James Callaghan, proposed new clauses for the finance bill to allow the disclosure of payments by big businesses to political party funds. To support his case he gave a list of 30 major companies that refused to say whether or not they had contributed to Conservative party funds. However, in the event the vote went against him and the proposed amendments were defeated, leaving the issue of party funding unresolved. The cartoon depicts five stereotypical conservatives standing with their eyes shut and above them are the words: 'Above is a full statement of the contibutions made by companies to the Conservative party.' Yet, above them, there is no list, only angels, clouds, stars and an image of God writing an ungainly list of numbers.
