DescriptionThe Labour party won the general election in October 1964 and Harold Wilson became prime minister. One of the issues on which the Conservatives had fought the election was Britain's retention of its own nuclear deterrent. Labour were against this and in their manifesto declared that the US-built Polaris 'will not be independent and it will not be British and it will not deter'. In an allusion to the BBC's weekly satirical programme, 'That Was the Week That Was' (which ended in December 1963), Abu has Harold Wilson and Denis Healey (defence secretary) driving a removal truck carrying away the 'independent deterrent' that never was.
