| Description | 1 folder containing correspondence and papers relating to the printing of the Guardian Weekly in both the British Zone and the American Zone (and, from 1948, the French Zone) of Germany.
Included are a small handwritten diary of LP Scott's visit to Germany in April 1947, including many anecdotal observations and comments on the state of the country, post-war; correspondence with of Ewald Schmidt di Simoni, publisher of Die Ziet newspaper, regarding his company's licence to distribute the Guardian in Germany; correspondence with the Control Office for Germany and Austria, regarding allowing the Guardian access to a bank account in Hamburg, for administering the printing of the paper, and the problems encountered with selling it for 'probably worthless' German marks; letter from the Control Office, praising the Guardian's efforts to 'infuse democratic thought and practice into Germany', despite their monetary loss; correspondence with the chief of the PRISC division of the Control Commission for Germany (British Element), regarding increasing their exportation of newsprint (thereby alleviating the situation in Germany, brought about by paper rationing) and also, printing directly in Hamburg, May 1947; correspondence with the Board of Trade, and the Foreign Office on the same; correspondence with the afore-mentioned Schmidt di Simoni regarding the charges incurred through importing paper into Germany, and the currency reform law of 1948 (from reichsmarks to deutschmarks); document titled 'Third Regulation for the New Military Order, Responsibilities of members of the United Nations (undated); correspondence with Schmidt di Simoni regarding the affect that the Currency Reform Law has had on printing the Guardian in Germany, and the consequent decision to print in England once more, and export copies to Germany, February 1950; correspondence regarding Schmidt di Simoni's discreditation, subsequent to the aforesaid Currency Reform Act, February 1951.
