Admin HistoryThe Manchester Guardian and Evening News Society was established in 1926 as the company union of MGEN. It acted as a intermediary in negotiations between MGEN and its employees and provided benefits such sickness benefits, pensions and other staff funds. During the Second World War the severe air raids in Manchester made it necessary for newspapers to have emergency plans to use other printing plants in the event of bomb damage to their own premises. However, no other newspapers were willling to make arrangements with MGEN because of hostility of the Typographical Association towards the Society, and MGEN took the decision to terminate its agreement with the Society in 1941. The Society was officially dissolved on 31 December 1941 and The Joint Typographical Association Chapels' Sick and Benefit Society was established on 1 January 1942 to take over from the MGEN Society with regards sick pay and some other benefits, whilst the administration of pensions was transferred back to the Company itself.
