| Description | Cuttings of each of the Guardian's leading articles (leaders) with manuscript annotations of the author's initials. Researchers should note that leaders do not necessarily express the personal views of their writers, but instead are written to express the newspaper's contemporary position on a current topic.
The administrator of the Leaders, Letters and Comments section cut the leading articles from the newspaper each day and marked each leading article with the initials of the author. No other method to identify the authors of the leading articles is maintained.
It is apparent that at various times two sets of leading article cuttings books were produced but the second series was not sustained for any significant lengths of time. The two sets were not identical in the date spans for each volume. A second series of leading article marked up cuttings books is retained in the archive (GUA/6/4/1/2) to assist in filling gaps of the master series. |
