Description | Cuttings of each of the Guardian's leading articles (leaders) with manuscript annotations of the author's initials. Leading articles were published anonymously each day as the collective view of the newspaper. Researchers should note that leaders do not necessarily express the personal views of their writers.
The administrator of the Leaders, Letters and Comments section would cut the leading articles from the newspaper each day and mark each leading article with the initials of the author. From 1988 to 2004 no other method to identify the authors of the leading articles was maintained.
It is apparent that at various times 2 sets of leading article cuttings books were produced but the second series was not sustained for any significant lengths of time. The 2 sets were not identical in the dates spans for each volume.
It is not known why this second series of cuttings books was maintained. Today, they are useful in filling some of the gaps of the master series (GUA/6/4/1/1). |
