DescriptionPapers of, and relating to, Alastair Hetherington who worked for the Guardian from 1950 to 1975, and was editor between 1956 and 1975.

Hetherington's papers in this collection were retained separately from other records of his personal life and career, and demonstrate the breadth of his interests. The material concerning his work in establishing Die Welt newspaper at the end of the second world war illustrate his early journalism. Individual letters and photographs provide insights into his work at the Guardian and press cuttings, film and other items demonstrate his work outside of, and after, the Guardian. The memorials and tributes, retained by Sheila Hetherington and passed to the archive with these records, complete the picture of his life and work.
