Educated at Edinburgh University. Whilst studying he had his first short story published in the New Edinburgh Review. Became a reporter on the Northampton Chronicle & Echo in 1985 after graduating from City University's journalism school in London. Joined The Scotsman newspaper as a reporter three years later. His first novel was published in 1989.
Joined the Guardian as a freelance journalist writing from Ukraine in November 1990. Between 1991 and 1999 he reported for the Guardian from the former USSR. Between 1999 and 2005 he held successive roles at including religious affairs editor, science correspondent, features writer and foreign correspondent from 2001 until 2005.
Guardian reporter in Kuwait and Iraq during the 2003 Iraq War. Awarded foreign reporter of the year in 2004 at the British Press Awards for his reporting from Iraq and about Guatanamo Bay.
Left the Guardian in May 2006 to write fiction full time. He is the author of two collections of short stories and four novels. Contributing editor for the London Review of Books. |
