Description | Cartoon features a man who is labelled "voter" leaving the side of a boxing ring, holding a newspaper which reads "boxing and brain damage". Harold Wilson and an unknown man with a jumper reading "Iain" stand around the ring and look towards the voter leaving his seat. Two men wearing boxing gloves are in the ring - standing is [Roy Jenkins] and seated, rubbing his head, is [Peter Shore]. Roy Jenkins was Home Secretary in the second Wilson administration and a staunch suporter of the European common market. Peter Shore was the Home Secretary for Trade in the second Wilson administration and eurosceptic. It is likely that the cartoon is about infighting in the Labour party over the European question in the years 1974-5. |
