Description | Harold Wilson stands beside a car with a GB sticker on it. Next to him is a concierge with his watch held out, and on the floor beside them is a suitcase labelled 'Hotel Empire'. They are both looking towards the left of the image, where Georges Pompidou is kicking Alain Poher, who is kneeling on the floor with his fists raised. They are standing on a red carpet that is yet to be rolled out, and above them is an awning with the words 'Hotel Europe' emblazoned on it.
At the bottom of the image the words 'A question of who will roll out the red carpet' has been erased.
Notes: News (24th May) After being denounced for alleged opportunism by his opponent Georges M Pompidou, victory was predicted for Alain M. Poher in the French presidential election. (The Times Index, May-June 1969) |
