Title | "We, the non-aligned nations, demand that you toe the line..." |
Date | [1971-1974] |
Extent | 1 cartoon |
Creator Name | Gibbard; Leslie David (1945-2010); cartoonist |
Description | The cartoon shows US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger standing alongside [US president Richard Nixon] and shaking the hand of [Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev]. Behind them stand a group of leaders of Africa, Asian and Arab countries, at their feet there is a line which reads "boycott".
[It is likely that this cartoon relates to the proposals made by third world countries in the early 1970s to establish a New International Economic Order (NIEO), these proposals coincided with a relative cooling off period in Cold War tensions between the US and the USSR known as "detente". During this period there was renewed economic cooperation between the US and the USSR, perhaps explaining why it appears as though they are ignoring the third world leaders in the cartoon.] |
