Description | Cartoon shows Edward Heath carrying a rifle riding on the back of [Georgios Papadopoulos] and egging him onwards. Behind them a ball and chain labelled "6d" lies open.
[Background information: whilst both Labour and Conservative governments that were in power during the period of the Greek dictatorship aided them in some way, the Edward Heath administration was particularly forthcoming prioritising not simply stability within the NATO alliance but also actively trading with Greece. It is likely that this cartoon refers to some aid given by the Heath adminsitration to the Greek Junta (lead by Papadopoulos until 1973) against political opponents and/or obstacles.] |
