Description | Cartoon shows a man being held at gunpoint by the Chef and the waiter whilst sitting at a table in a restaurant. The chef has the face of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and the waiter has the face of Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin. Both are threatening the customer (labelled "Czech press") into eating what is on his plate. Instead of food on his plate there is a jumble of words such as "democratic", "opinion", "traitors" etc.. Instead of cutlery the customer is using a miniature hammer and a sickle.
In May 1969 Czech journalists were warned by the Russian Communist Party Presidium and accused of arousing hatred. (source: University of Kent, British Cartoon archive). |
