Description | Cartoon shows members of Harold Wilson's first Labour cabinet riding in a pick-up truck with the words "going on with Harold" written on the side. Harold Wilson and Barbara Castle sit in the front seat; Richard Crossmen, Michael Stewart, Denis Healey, Tony Benn and Roy Jenkins are riding in the back of the truck. They are chasing James Callaghan who is riding a bicylce off of the edge of a cliff, the words "trade figures" are written on the side of the cliff.
News (13th May) Harold Wilson dropped Home Secretary James Callaghan from his inner cabinet after Callaghan had sided with the TUC in opposing reforms announced in Barbara Castle's White Paper 'In Place of Strife'. At least 100 MPs were rebelling and there had been an attempted coup by Labour left-wingers to topple Mr. Wilson. (source: University of Kent, British Cartoon Archive) |
