Context: Sir Geoffrey Howe, Minister for Trade and Consumer Affairs, made a statement in the Commons about the Monopolies Commission report on the supply of patented tranquilizers to the NHS by Roche Products Ltd. The report concluded that United Kingdom prices had been too high and that the Roche group had obtained profits far in excess of what is justifiable through the sale of the drugs Valium and Librium.
