| Description | Margaret Thatcher drives a boat labelled 'The Inner Cabinet' down a canal with Nigel Lawson on it. The sky ahead of them is labelled 'Upper reaches of Thatcherism'. Ahead of the boat, Norman Tebbit and Geoffrey Howe open the canal locks. Attached by a rope to the boat is a rowboat labelled 'Northern Ireland' with an unidentified man in it. It is trapped behind a much bigger lock. Two bystanders say 'Says he wouldn't be surprised if this is as far as he goes!'.
Context: A few weeks prior to this cartoon's publication, the New Ireland Forum released its report on possible approaches to alleviating the troubles, which Thatcher disagreed with. |
