| Description | This cartoon depicts people drawn as characters from Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows, in the style of EH Shepard. Margaret Thatcher as Toad is being dragged up the stairs by chancellor John Major as Rat and deputy prime minister Geoffrey Howe as Mole. Foreign secretary Douglas Hurd as Badger, stands at the bottom of the stairs pointing at them. The text reads "I feared it would come to this all along. You've often asked us three to come and stay with you, Toad, in this handsome house of yours; well, now we are going to... When we've converted you to a proper point of view we may quit, but not before..." They are dragging Thatcher to a door labelled 'Collective Responsibility.'
[This likely refers to Thatcher's autocratic style, and her lack of consulting her cabinet, resulting in Nigel Lawson resigning and John Major replacing him. (Sourced from Gibbard at the Guardian 1969 to 1994).] |
