| Description | Depicts the Lord Chancellor [Lord Hailsham], along with two other business men, driving in a car drinking Champagne. The number plate reads 'Top 1', the men are waving merrily at a man emerging from 'Joseph's takeaways'. 'Joseph's takeaways' has a poster on the wall that reads 'Only six chips per customer by order', the car is driving through a puddle and splashing the man emerging from the chip shop. On the opposite side of the road Margaret Thatcher and Nigel Lawson wave at the car as it passes under an awning that reads 'Chez Plowden'.
Context: Edwin Plowden was chair of the top salaries review body in Thatcher's government. The cartoon refers to the Government's decision to sanction big increases in top salaries. |
