| Description | Margaret Thatcher, Viscount Quintin McGarel Hailsham and Viscount William Whitelaw are all riding in a chariot with the words 'Flat Rate Poll Tax' on it, pulled by a '3-line whip', that just flattened the Lords protesting the Poll Tax. Thatcher is yelling 'Tee-hee! That flattened 'em!' while people watch them, scowling and holding up a sign that reads 'Vote'.
Likely references Conservative Lords attempted to make the Poll Tax fairer, but being flattened by Thatcher's use of a three-line whip (a compulsory 'yes' vote) and the appearance of peers not normally seen in the House. (Source: Gibbards, Double Decade Omnibus). |
