Title | Barber and the beanstalk |
Date | [1970s] |
Extent | 1 cartoon |
Creator Name | Gibbard; Leslie David (1945-2010); cartoonist |
Description | Anthony Barber is jumping from a beanstalk and escaping from a giant, who has a paper with "Giant wage claims" written on it. Edward Heath stands below wearing an apron and beside him is the base of the bean stalk and an axe. The bean has "Stand on your own feet" written across it and the axe also has "Freeze" written on it. [The cartoon is based on Anthony Barber's budget and the Conservative u-turn on economic policy in the 1970s, due to high inflation and the wage demands of the public sector.]
There is a rough sketch of another cartoon on the reverse side. The cartoon is titled "Psst - do you think we should try another song?" and shows Edward Heath and Anthony Barber sitting before a giant snake that is emerging from a container that has "Wage claims" written on it. Anthony Barber is playing a trumpet with a music sheet attached, titled "Down boy, down (please)". This cartoon was perhaps an unused alternative to the "Barber and the beanstalk" image. |
