Description | Account of Robert Kemp's time at the Manchester Guardian, written by his son Arnold Kemp, who himself worked for the Observer from 1999 to 2002 as foreign news editor.
Born in 1908 and studied at Aberdeen University. Worked as a reporter for the Manchester Guardian between 1929 and 1937. The last man to be appointed by CP Scott. Describes friendship with future novelist Howard Spring, also at the paper. Married in 1932. Describes how newsroom still wrote everything by hand and culture of long lunchtimes in the pub. Gravitated towards theatrical criticism. Left the paper in 1937 and went to the BBC. |
