Hired in 1969 as a sub-editor on the colour magazine, he describes the Observer as a "writer's paper". Became what he calls a "utility player", or an "all-rounder". Sporadic contributions to the sports desk. He was also the first editor of the Young Observer. Avoided executive posts. Describes his greatest scoop as an exclusive on the discovery of the Titanic wreck. |
