Description | Memoir of Donald Wintersgill's career at the Guardian. He describes the calm and polite atmosphere of the Manchester office, and how staff were allocated a desk for life. He also describes the "elitist ethic", particularly surrounding the writing of editorial pieces. Goes on to mention the public-school atmosphere of the Observer. He puts spelling errors in the Guardian down to under-staffing.
Finally, he discusses his time in the syndication department. |
Admin History | Donald Wintersgill joined the Guardian in 1962 and worked as a sub-editor in Manchester, September 1962-March 1964. He then moved to London as a sub-editor on the 'backbench' from 1964 to 1973. He was syndication editor from 1973 to August 1997. |
