Description | Memoirs of Geoffrey Moorhouse, who worked for the Guardian from 1958 - 1970.
He joined the Manchester Guardian as a sub-editor in the summer of 1958 after working for the Bolton Evening News and the News Chronicle in Manchester. Appointed by Brian Redhead as his first deputy features editor, he goes on to describe the office environment and working relations.
He describes his boredom with the deputy features editor position, citing a desire to write for the paper instead. Change came when Brian Redhead left to pursue a television career and the paper moved to London. Geoffrey was appointed the paper's first designated chief features writer.
He describes how happy he was as chief features writer, turning down positions elsewhere to remain in the position. Lists his proudest moment as being "the only person who ever had more pieces in the Bedside Guardian than Alistair Cooke in his prime." |
