Description | Memoir of Margaret Hides' time at the Guardian.
Margaret describes how her father worked in the paper's printing room and then, after suffering injury in World War One, moved to the publishing room. Because of her father's connections, Margaret was given a job at the paper in the 'counting house' (accounts) when she left school at 15.
After about 18 months, around the start of the Second World War, she took a job as a copy taker on editorial. She describes the experience of working for the paper during the war.
Margaret married fellow journalist Michael Hides, who became chief sub editor. |
