Jim joined the Observer in August 1953 as a copytaker and clerical assistant for the foreign news service. Here he describes the workings of the service and the technology used at the time.
Promoted to admin manager by Clive Bradley, Jim recalls how Friday and Saturday were his busiest times, particularly Saturday afternoon with incoming sports reports. He retired at 64, but continued to oversee the Saturday copytaking operation until 1999. |
