| Description | Correspondence from Nora Beloff to her family from 1957. The letters are mostly written from Paris where Beloff was working as Paris correspondent for The Observer. Correspondence from January includes postcards from a skiing holiday Beloff took with her family in the Alps. In her letters from February Beloff discusses work she has done with Philip Toynbee concerning Albert Camus. Included with the February correspondence is a typescript of several articles Beloff had written for The Observer and in the March correspondence is a typescript of an article detailing the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Paris. Also included in the letters from March is a postcard detailing a visit to Germany for work purposes. Letters from May give details of a trip to Strasbourg where Beloff prepared a profile of Paul-Henri Spaak, Lord Ismay's successor at NATO. Letters from June detail Beloff relationship with The Observer's staff including the visit of The Observer's business manager to Paris. Included in the letters throughout the year are comments about the situation between France and Algeria, high prices in France and crises in the French government. At the back of the file are letters without specific dates and letters that are incomplete. Also found at the end of the file is a typescript of an article written by Beloff, 'Can French democracy survive?' which describes the tensions in French politics. |
