DescriptionRecords relating to the negotation of agreements between the Observer chapel of the NUJ and the newspaper's management. Contains copies (non-original) of the following agreements for the following years:

Observer Saturday agreement: 1972-3 (signed copy and unsigned draft).
Observer House agreement:1970-71 (draft & signed photocopy); 1972-3 (NUJ & revised drafts); 1974-5 (signed photocopy).

Includes correspondence and memos relating to the agreements and on the following subjects: office space for NUJ meetings (1968); salary comparisons with other newspapers; the NPA/NUJ relationship (1970); paygrade explanations and appraisal criteria; the extension of non-pay sections of the 1970-71 house agreement, due to expire at the end of 1971, to end of June 1972 in line with national negotiations (1971); insurance for reporters and photographers in high risk areas (1971); recommendations from the Department for Employment and Productivity about journalists' salaries (1970); outside work; the Institute of Journalists (1974); the employment of an 'unqualified' journalist and the journalists' qualification clause in general (1970-1974).

Also contains: a report by Ronald Higgins on 'Editorial Independence, the NPA and the NUJ' at the Observer; a transcript of an NPA-NUJ meeting (27 Oct 1970) and the first and fourth Observer NUJ chapel bulletins (7 December 1971 & 5 August 1972).
