DescriptionPrint files from the Guardian's original picture library in Manchester. An additional picture library was established in London in the 1960s when the Guardian started printing there in the early 1960s (see GUA/6/9/1/1) and the Manchester picture library eventually closed in the late 1970s/early 1980s. This series contains photographs on a wide range of subjects taken mainly by the paper's staff photographers, although there are a few examples of agency pictures. Not all pictures appeared in the paper, but where they did these are dated. In most instances there is no photographer credit for photographs pre 1950 but most are identifiable by either the date or handwriting on the back.

Particuarly well represented within this series are photographs by those working for the Guardian between the mid-sixties to late seventies including; Don McPhee, Denis Thorpe, Kenneth Saunders, Edward Hamilton-West, Robert Smithies, Martin Argles, Tom Stuttard, Graham Finlayson, Neil Libbert, Don Morley, Graham Turner, Frank Martin, Eric Wadsworth, Peter Johns and Garry Weaser. Less represented within the sequence appear examples by; Tom Jenkins, David Sillitoe, Geoff Hallawell, Robin Laurence, John Wildgoose, Ian Swift, Keith Pannell, Michael Charity, Philip Jones Griffiths and Walter Doughty.
